Overview

eMbody Dance Company was founded in 2008 to support and bring together Central Ohio dancers, choreographers and performances.  eMbody Dance commissions pieces in a wide range of dance art forms including Contemporary, Jazz, Modern, Ballet, Lyrical, Tap and Hip-Hop.  eMbody Dance uses a unique and creative process for selecting pieces and staging dancers to better engage and promote all Central Ohio dance professionals.  As it matures, eMbody Dance will position itself to bring together the necessary resources to support all aspects of dance in Central Ohio from professional performances to community education.

Artistic Direction

eMbody Dance is actively searching for three Central Ohio dance professionals for positions on its Artistic Advisory Board.  In keeping with the cross functional nature of its charter, eMbody Dance will find its artistic direction from a collection of professionals instead of a single Artistic Director.  eMbody Dance plans to fill the three positions on its Artistic Advisory Board by the end of 2008.

Choreographers

As a brand new company, eMbody Dance has to date commissioned a single piece choreographed by Rachel Smith entitled Starting Over.  In keeping with its charter, eMbody Dance is looking for choreographers with vision and works that cross art forms in energetic and new ways.  In order to be considered, the piece must have some connection to the Central Ohio professional dance community.

Dancers

Unlike many companies, eMbody Dance does not audition and select dancers independent of pieces.  Instead, eMbody Dance maintains a company roster of dancers with information about each dancer helping choreographers decide how to fill their piece.  Choreographers staging a piece have the option of choosing dancers from the company roster, holding open auditions or selecting dancers from other companies.  Any dancer that has recently performed for eMbody Dance may ask to be included in the roster of dancers.

Performances

At this time, eMbody Dance Company plans to produce two performances a year.  The first will be a professional performance bringing to the audience the full scope of dance experiences through a show that is both rich in artistry and commercially successful.  The second performance will focus on the future of Central Ohio dance by inviting the top companies from local dance studios to share the stage with professional dancers and choreographers connecting strong, young artists with the Central Ohio dance community.

Moving Forward

eMbody Dance Company hopes to develop into its final form over the next 18 months.  eMbody Dance is in the process of applying for 501(c)3 status with the IRS to better enable it to raise the funds necessary to support Central Ohio choreographers, dancers, performances and dance education.  eMbody Dance is looking to commission one or two additional pieces in 2008 and three or four pieces in 2009.  All interested choreographers and dancers should submit materials through info@embodydancecompany.org.  eMbody Dance plans to produce at least one performance in 2009 along with starting its educational program.
